Ancestry

In the late 1800’s Lord Tweedmouth, an English aristocrat living in Scotland, bred his yellow Labrador Retriever with a water spaniel dog. This became known as the Tweed water spaniel. Over the years, this spaniel was bred with other Retriever, Setter, Newfoundland, and Bloodhound dogs. The original Tweed water spaniel is now extinct, but the resulting Golden Retriever is well loved. As the dog came to America, the breeding became more isolated, and the two different styles developed. Golden Retrievers, both American Goldens and English Creams, are among some of the most popular dogs in the world. Read more details on their personalities from the AKC site here.
